From July 17–24, our family traveled from East Tennessee to Orlando for a week-long vacation. We spent six full days (July 18–23) exploring Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, Volcano Bay, and Universal CityWalk. We traveled as a family with two adults, our 17-year-old son, and one of his friends, giving us a unique perspective on what Universal Orlando is really like for families with teenagers.

This wasn't a hosted media event or a sponsored trip. We paid for our vacation ourselves, stayed on-site at Universal's Hard Rock Hotel, experienced the parks from rope drop to late into the evening, and made plenty of memories—along with a few mistakes we'd gladly help you avoid.

Yes—Universal Orlando is absolutely worth the trip.

After spending six park days exploring Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe, Volcano Bay, and CityWalk, we left with unforgettable memories and a list of attractions we can't wait to experience again.

That said, this isn't a cheap vacation.

Between park tickets, hotel accommodations, food, souvenirs, and travel expenses, Universal Orlando requires a significant investment. We believe it's worth every penny if you plan ahead and prioritize the experiences that matter most to your family.

If you're traveling with younger children, there's still plenty to enjoy, but another park may offer more attractions specifically designed for toddlers and preschool-aged kids.

Over the next several sections, we'll break down everything from hotels and Express Passes to our favorite rides, best restaurants, money-saving tips, and the lessons we learned during our week at Universal Orlando Resort.

Where We Stayed – Our Honest Review of Universal's Hard Rock Hotel

For our July 2026 vacation, we stayed at Universal's Hard Rock Hotel, one of Universal Orlando's Premier Hotels. One of the biggest benefits of staying here is that every registered guest receives complimentary Unlimited Express Passes for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, which can save both time and money during your trip.

The hotel's location is excellent. It's just a short walk to Universal CityWalk, and the complimentary water taxi makes getting to and from the parks incredibly convenient.

While we enjoyed our stay overall, this wasn't our first time staying at a Universal Orlando resort. Having previously stayed at Loews Royal Pacific Resort, we couldn't help but compare the two—and for our family, Royal Pacific was the clear winner.

What We Loved

📍 Unbeatable Location

Hard Rock Hotel is one of the closest hotels to the parks, making it incredibly easy to return to your room for an afternoon break or head back after a long day without a lengthy walk.

🚤 The Water Taxi

One of our favorite parts of staying at a Premier Resort was the complimentary water taxi.

The boat captains and dock Team Members were always friendly, and the ride itself became part of the vacation experience. It was relaxing, convenient, and a fun way to start and end each park day.

💚 Travel Explore Capture Tip: Plan to arrive at the water taxi dock about 20 minutes before Early Park Admission begins. The boats can fill up quickly on busy mornings.

🎟️ Unlimited Express Passes

This was easily one of the biggest advantages of staying at Hard Rock Hotel. Having Unlimited Express Passes included with our stay allowed us to spend far more time enjoying attractions and much less time standing in line at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

Where Hard Rock Fell Short

This is where our experience differed from many of the glowing reviews you'll find online.

The Rooms Felt Small

For a family of four, the room felt noticeably smaller than we expected for a Premier Resort. We never felt cramped to the point of it affecting our vacation, but we were surprised by how limited the space felt compared to our previous stay at Royal Pacific.

The Bathroom Layout

This was probably our biggest disappointment.

The bathroom felt very small, and the shelving and layout made it awkward for more than one person to get ready at the same time. During busy mornings before heading to the parks, it quickly became apparent that the space just wasn't designed efficiently for multiple people.

The Pool Didn't Wow Us

The pool area was nice, but it didn't leave a lasting impression.

Compared to Royal Pacific, the pool felt smaller, shallower, and much more crowded during our stay. The nightly movies were a fun touch for families with younger children, but they also made the pool area feel lively and noisy when we were hoping to relax after spending the day in the parks.

The hot tub was almost always full, making it difficult to enjoy.

Which Hotel Would We Choose Next Time?

Without hesitation, we'd book Loews Royal Pacific Resort again.

Our previous stay there simply felt more relaxing from start to finish. We preferred the larger-feeling rooms, the tropical atmosphere, the pool, and the overall resort experience.

That doesn't mean Hard Rock Hotel is a bad choice—it isn't.

If your top priority is staying as close as possible to the parks while taking advantage of Unlimited Express Passes, Hard Rock Hotel still offers tremendous value.

For our family's travel style, however, Royal Pacific delivered the more enjoyable overall experience.

Final Thoughts

Would we stay at Hard Rock Hotel again? Yes, if the price and included Unlimited Express Passes made it the best value.

But if we had the choice between the two Premier Resorts we've experienced, we'd choose Loews Royal Pacific Resort every time. For us, it simply provided a more comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable place to come back to after long days exploring Universal Orlando.

Is Universal's Express Pass Worth It?

If there's one upgrade we'd recommend most for a Universal Orlando vacation, it's Express Pass.

For us, it completely changed the experience.

Instead of spending hours waiting in line, we were able to experience more attractions, take breaks when we wanted, enjoy leisurely meals, and even re-ride some of our favorites. Rather than rushing from one attraction to the next, we felt like we could actually slow down and enjoy the parks.

What Is Universal Express Pass?

Universal Express Pass allows you to use a shorter line at participating attractions, significantly reducing your wait time.

There are two main versions:

Universal Express Pass – Skip the regular line one time per participating attraction.
Universal Express Unlimited – Skip the regular line as many times as you'd like at participating attractions.

During our stay at Hard Rock Hotel, Unlimited Express Passes were included for every registered guest. This benefit alone can save hundreds of dollars compared to purchasing them separately.

What Express Pass Doesn't Include

This is important because it's something many first-time visitors misunderstand.

The complimentary Unlimited Express Pass included with Premier Hotels only covers Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

It does not include:

Epic Universe
Volcano Bay

If you want Express access at those parks, you'll need to purchase the appropriate Express Pass separately if it's available during your visit.

Was It Worth It?

For our family, absolutely.

We were able to experience more attractions in less time, revisit our favorites, and avoid spending large portions of the day standing in line.

That flexibility also made the vacation feel less stressful. We didn't feel pressured to race across the parks trying to squeeze everything into one day.

When We'd Recommend Buying Express Pass

Express Pass is especially worth considering if:

You're visiting during busy seasons.
You only have one or two days in the parks.
You want to experience as many attractions as possible.
You don't enjoy standing in long lines.
You're traveling with teenagers who want to ride the biggest attractions multiple times.

When You Might Skip It

You may not need Express Pass if:

You're visiting during a slower time of year.
You're staying for several park days and don't mind taking your time.
You're comfortable using Early Park Admission and arriving before the crowds.

Our Recommendation

If your budget allows, we'd strongly recommend staying at one of Universal's Premier Hotels that includes Unlimited Express Passes for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

When we considered the cost of purchasing Express Passes separately for our family, having them included with our hotel stay added tremendous value and made the entire vacation more enjoyable.

It's one of those upgrades that doesn't just save time—it changes the pace of your vacation. Less time waiting means more time making memories, trying new restaurants, riding your favorite attractions again, and simply enjoying everything Universal Orlando has to offer.

One of the things we loved most about Universal Orlando Resort is that each park has its own personality. No two parks feel the same, which keeps every day fresh and exciting.

Instead of trying to rank one park as "the best," it's more helpful to know what each park does exceptionally well. Here's our honest take after spending time in all four parks.

🌎 Universal Studios Florida

Our Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Universal Studios Florida blends blockbuster movies, immersive themed lands, and some of the resort's best dark rides into a park that's fun from the moment you walk through the gates.

Some of our favorite attractions here included:

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
The Simpsons Ride
E.T. Adventure

One thing we appreciated was the variety. You can go from exploring Diagon Alley to escaping an ancient curse inside the Mummy, then slow things down with the nostalgic E.T. Adventure—all within the same day.

Don't rush through Diagon Alley.

Take time to explore the shops, look for hidden details, and simply enjoy the atmosphere. It's one of the most immersive areas in all of Universal Orlando.

If you're looking for thrills, Islands of Adventure delivers.

This park is home to some of Universal's most iconic attractions and roller coasters, making it a favorite for adrenaline seekers.

Highlights for our family included:

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
Skull Island: Reign of Kong
Hogsmeade

Even if you're not a roller coaster fan, Spider-Man and Skull Island offer incredible storytelling and remain some of Universal's best attractions.

Hogsmeade is also a must-visit. Between Hogwarts Castle, Butterbeer, and the charming shops, it's easy to spend hours simply taking everything in.

🌌 Epic Universe

Our Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Epic Universe completely exceeded our expectations.

The attention to detail, immersive environments, and next-generation attractions made this the park we talked about the most after returning home.

Every land feels like stepping into a different world.

Whether you're racing through Super Nintendo World, exploring Dark Universe, or simply walking through Celestial Park, it's clear that an incredible amount of creativity went into every detail.

If we had one recommendation, it would be this:

Arrive early.

Epic Universe draws large crowds, especially in Super Nintendo World, and you'll enjoy the experience much more if you can experience the most popular attractions before the park fills up.

🌊 Volcano Bay

Our Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4.5/5)

Volcano Bay is beautifully themed and provides a refreshing break from the Florida heat.

The massive Krakatau Volcano creates an incredible backdrop, and the tropical atmosphere makes it feel like you're vacationing on an island rather than visiting a water park.

We genuinely enjoyed our day here.

That said, because we live in East Tennessee and regularly visit Soaky Mountain, we chose to spend only one day at Volcano Bay and dedicate the rest of our vacation to Universal's theme parks.

For us, that was the right decision.

If you've never visited Volcano Bay, it's absolutely worth experiencing. Just know that if your schedule is limited, the theme parks offer the attractions and experiences that make Universal Orlando truly unique.

🛍️ Universal CityWalk

Our Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

While it isn't a theme park, CityWalk deserves its own mention because we found ourselves there almost every evening.

Whether we were enjoying dinner at Cowfish, grabbing dessert, relaxing with a drink at Pat O'Brien's, or simply taking in the atmosphere after a full day in the parks, CityWalk became one of our favorite places to unwind.

It's more than just a shopping and dining district—it's the perfect way to end a day at Universal Orlando.

The biggest surprise for me was Monsters Unchained. The technology, special effects, and atmosphere completely exceeded my expectations.

Not every memorable attraction has to be the fastest or the newest.

One of the most meaningful rides for me was The Cat in the Hat in Seuss Landing.

As I rode through the story, I couldn't help but think back to reading that same book over and over to our son when he was little. Now, at 17 years old, we were riding it together going through the story.

It was a simple reminder that some attractions aren't memorable because they're thrilling—they're memorable because of the memories they bring back.

Sometimes, those are the moments that stay with you the longest.

Don't focus only on the biggest rides.

Leave time for the classics, explore the themed lands, and enjoy the smaller attractions. Some of our favorite memories came from slowing down instead of racing from one thrill ride to the next.

The Best Food We Ate (and What We'd Skip Next Time)

Before our trip, we expected the attractions to be the highlight of our vacation.

What surprised us most was how good the food was.

From quick-service meals inside the parks to full-service restaurants at CityWalk, we found ourselves talking about several meals long after we returned home. While not every restaurant was a home run, there were a few we'd recommend to anyone visiting Universal Orlando.

🥇 1. Cowfish – American Wagyu Sushi

📍 Universal CityWalk

If we could only recommend one restaurant at Universal Orlando, this would be it.

We ordered the American Wagyu Sushi, and it was hands down the best thing we ate during our entire vacation.

The quality exceeded our expectations, the presentation was beautiful, and it was one of those meals you immediately start talking about while you're still eating it.

Would we go back? Absolutely.

This was one of the most unique breakfasts we had all week.

The Butterbeer Waffle perfectly captured the flavors Harry Potter fans know and love, and pairing it with a cold Butterbeer made for an unforgettable meal inside Hogsmeade.

Even if you're not a huge Harry Potter fan, it's worth trying at least once.

Most people visit Toothsome for the incredible milkshakes—and while those are certainly worth seeing—we were pleasantly surprised by the food.

The flatbread was fresh, flavorful, and the perfect meal after a long day walking through the parks.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant is just as impressive as the menu, making it a fun place to spend an evening.

After spending all day in the parks, we enjoyed slowing down with a date night at Pat O'Brien's.

Their famous Hurricane was exactly what we hoped it would be and made for a relaxing way to end the evening.

If you're looking for a place to unwind after the parks close, we'd definitely recommend stopping in.

Not every restaurant lived up to our expectations.

Vivo Italian Kitchen

📍 Universal CityWalk

Let us start by saying this wasn't a bad meal.

The service was good, and the restaurant itself is beautiful.

However, after eating at several outstanding restaurants throughout Universal Orlando, Vivo was the one place that left us wanting more.

The pasta didn't taste as fresh as we expected, and the overall meal felt more like something we'd order at a casual chain restaurant than a signature dining experience at Universal.

Considering all of the incredible dining options available, we simply don't think this would be where we'd spend our money on a future trip.

That's not to say you won't enjoy it—everyone's tastes are different—but for us, there are too many better choices nearby.

💰 Budget & Value – Is a Universal Orlando Vacation Worth the Cost?

Let's be honest—a Universal Orlando vacation isn't cheap.

Between park tickets, hotel accommodations, airfare, food, souvenirs, and extras, it's easy to spend several thousand dollars on a family vacation. Before this trip, one of our biggest questions was whether the experience would justify the cost.

After spending a full week at Universal Orlando, our answer is simple:

Yes—but only if you plan wisely.

Where We Think the Money Was Well Spent

Some expenses felt completely justified because they made our vacation significantly more enjoyable.

✅ Staying at a Premier Hotel

Although Hard Rock Hotel wasn't our favorite Universal resort, staying at a Premier Hotel was still a smart decision.

The included Unlimited Express Passes for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure saved us hours of waiting in line and made each park day far more enjoyable.

If we return, we'd simply choose a different Premier Hotel rather than skip the Premier benefits altogether.

✅ Taking Advantage of Early Park Admission

Getting into the parks before the general public allowed us to experience several of the most popular attractions with much shorter wait times.

Those first few hours each morning were some of the most productive of our entire trip.

✅ Eating at Table-Service Restaurants

We expected theme park food.

Instead, we discovered some genuinely excellent restaurants.

Meals at Cowfish, Three Broomsticks, Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, and Confisco Grille became some of the highlights of our vacation.

For us, those meals were money well spent.

Where You Can Save Money

There are also several easy ways to stretch your vacation budget without sacrificing the experience.

💧 Bring a Refillable Water Bottle

Quick-service restaurants will happily provide complimentary cups of ice water, making it easy to refill your bottle throughout the day instead of constantly purchasing bottled drinks.

🍽️ Share Larger Meals

Several portions were large enough for two people to split, especially if you aren't looking for a huge meal.

Sharing a few meals throughout the week can save a surprising amount of money.

🌧️ Plan Around Florida Weather

Afternoon storms are common, especially during the summer.

Instead of getting frustrated, use that time for an early dinner, shopping, or exploring CityWalk while many other guests are waiting out the weather.

Our 17-year-old loved the mix of thrilling coasters, immersive dark rides, and movie-themed attractions. Even after six days in the parks, there were still rides he wanted to experience again.

Universal isn't just for families.

We enjoyed several quieter moments together, whether it was taking the water taxi back to the hotel, sharing dinner at Cowfish, relaxing with a Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's, or simply walking through CityWalk after dark.

There are plenty of opportunities for date nights mixed in with the excitement of the parks.

There are plenty of attractions for younger guests, including Minions, Seuss Landing, DreamWorks Land, and several interactive experiences throughout the resort.

That said, many of Universal's headline attractions have height requirements and are designed with older kids and teens in mind.

If you're traveling with little ones, it's worth reviewing ride requirements before your trip so you can plan each day accordingly.

The attention to detail, immersive lands, and incredible attractions completely exceeded our expectations.

If you're visiting Universal Orlando for the first time, Epic Universe should absolutely be on your itinerary.

If we had to recommend only one attraction, it would be:

🪄 Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

It was the only ride that appeared in everyone's Top 5 list, making it the one attraction our entire family agreed on.

Was Volcano Bay worth it?

Yes.

We really enjoyed Volcano Bay, but for our family, one day was enough.

Since we're fortunate to have Soaky Mountain close to home in East Tennessee, we chose to spend the majority of our vacation in Universal's theme parks, where the experiences are unique to Orlando.

Which hotel would we choose next time?

Although we stayed at Hard Rock Hotel during this trip, we'd personally choose Loews Royal Pacific Resort on our next visit.

We preferred the atmosphere, room layout, pool, and overall resort experience while still enjoying the same Premier Hotel benefits.

What's the best restaurant?

Specifically, the American Wagyu Sushi.
